Story

From 2000s pop sensation to The Alibi Sisters

ALIBI is a female duo of two sisters, Anna and Alina Zavalska. Over 25 years they went from the pop sensation of the 2000s to The Alibi Sisters. The new format keeps their elegant visual style and adds a new sound and deeper lyrics, now in Ukrainian. The core themes stay the same: female strength, wisdom and grace.

2001–2012

Rise

Albums, more than 10 singles and landmark music videos. The duo reaches the top league of the Ukrainian stage.

2012–2021

Pause

Families of their own, a pause in the ALIBI project and individual work across creative fields.

2021–2026

The Alibi Sisters

A new sound and image, and a cultural and educational mission in international settings.

The return

Back on the Ukrainian stage. Translations of their biggest hits become a new musical language for long-time listeners and new ones.

  1. 1997

    Music school

    Both sisters study violin at music school in Kyiv.

  2. 1998

    Cappuccino

    Until 2000 Anna and Alina are lead singers of the girl quartet Cappuccino. Anna writes lyrics and Alina writes music.

  3. 2000

    First singles

    With composer and producer Dmitry Klimashenko they release “Alibi”, which gives the group its name, and “At Christmas”.

  4. 2001

    ALIBI is born

    The duo counts 6 April 2001 as its birthday. Their father, Oleksandr Zavalsky, becomes the producer.

  5. 2002

    “Two Tears”

    The debut album comes out in April. New albums and hits follow year after year: “Yes or No”, “A Clean Slate”, “Confession”, “Taboo”.

  6. 2006

    Gold disc and Lou Bega

    The album “Soul Reflection” goes gold. The same year Lou Bega releases the single “Bachata” featuring ALIBI.

  7. 2012

    A pause

    The sisters start their own families and pause the ALIBI project, each developing her own creative work.

  8. 2019

    Together again on TV

    The sisters sing together again on the show “Pashyna 20-ka”.

  9. 2021

    The Alibi Sisters

    On the 20th anniversary of their first show they relaunch as The Alibi Sisters and perform on The Voice of Ukraine. The repertoire adds Ukrainian folk songs in modern arrangements, including “A Girl Walked the Meadows”, a dedication to Kyiv.

  10. 2026

    “Taboo” in Ukrainian

    On 20 February, 21 years after the original, they release a Ukrainian-language “Taboo” with Lohai.

    For 54,000 physical copies sold of the album “Soul Reflection” (2006).

  • Lou Bega

    International single “Bachata” feat. Alibi (2006) with the artist behind “Mambo No. 5”.

    Awards for “Confession” (2004) and “Taboo” (2005). Regular laureates of Song of the Year and Golden Sharmanka.

    National Golden Firebird award for the song “A Clean Slate”.
